Art law and advisory firm, Guest Work Agency (GWA) has advised the Ballarat International Foto Biennale on the entry terms and conditions for their inaugural Prompted Peculiar – International AI Prize. Ballarat International Foto Biennale is Australia’s most prestigious photographic festival, held in the historic town of Ballarat spanning over 60-days from August to October.  

IP Australia recently called on designers, intellectual property professionals and others who use the design rights system to share their thoughts on ways to improve the Australian design system and the protection it affords. As a legal practice with particular expertise in advising creatives, Guest Work Agency submitted a response outlining our suggestions regarding the proposed reforms and how they could better serve our clients.

The conference brought together industry leaders with domain expertise from different spheres to explore avenues for Australia’s future engagement with the digital assets sector.

Guest Work Agency’s Director and Founder Alana Kushnir recently assisted the Victorian Crimes Investigation Unit in identifying, cataloguing and returning missing artworks to eleven artists on a pro bono basis, after more than 70 artworks were discovered in connection with the ongoing investigation into art dealer Tristian Koenig.

In 2022, Guest Work Agency Director, Alana Kushnir and Paralegal Mia Schaumann contributed an article to the Australian Intellectual Property Law Bulletin exploring how artificial intelligence is challenging the law’s approach to art, with a particularly focus on attribution and forgery detection. Kushnir and Schaumann have recently submitted the second part of their research, investigating the intellectual property issues surrounding art made using machine learning tools from an Australian perspective.

In the third instalment of the Serpentine Legal Lab Live series, Alana Kushnir and legal scholar, internet activist, and artist Primavera de Filippi explored the legal and technical issues surrounding the licensing of NFTs.

In December 2022, The RMIT Conference: What’s Governing Web3 brought together leading researchers to present industry-defining findings and insights into policy solutions for blockchain-enabled Web3 governance. Guest Work Agency Director and Founder Alana Kushnir contributed to the Short Talks: Regulation Interface program, with a talk entitled Mapping the Resale Royalty Landscape of NFTs in Australia.
